US Attorney General Convenes Prisoner Re-entry Group
Date: 07/01/2011
US Attorney General Eric Holder announced at the EOEF conference in Washington in October that an Interagency Prisoner Re-entry Council would be set up in the United States.
Its inaugural meeting was convened this week. Representatives from the Departments of Labour, Education, Health and Human Services, Agriculture, Housing and Urban Development, Veteran Affairs and The Equal Employment Opportunity Commisson were present.
One of its main goals is to leverage resources across agencies to reduce recidivism and victimisation, promote changes to federal statutes, and identify federal policy opportunities and barriers to improve outcomes for the formerly incarcerated.
The presence of so many key cabinet members demonstrates that the re-entry agenda is taking a more central position on the American political stage. It could prove useful to watch this space to see which policy outcomes from the Re-entry Council could be transferable to the UK.
